the alt+xxxx symbols vary from font to font and the only
way to see the alt+xxxx chars for the font you want to see
is to use charmap or just sit there typing them in one
at a time.

You would be well advised to forget about alt+xxxx chars
unless you REALLY need them real bad and will just die
if you cant use them or you are a DOS programmer making
something with a textmode GUI or just dont really care
if what you type in looks remotely the same on someone
elses system when they arent using the same font you
are using.

What looks like you want is the dos character set.
You can download this small(4kb) tsr that will show
you all the dos characters from my site.

http://www.gtcom.net/~krogg/storage/asc.zip

run the program and tap the [alt] key twice and
use the arrows to scroll up and down in the list.

Be Cool,
 Krogg.

The problem is that I'm making some ascii-art in our
text adventure game (dos), and dos uses an AMERICAN
keyboard. Ex. when i press it gives you an \ or something.

I remember that there was a list of ascii symbols in the faq?

Lauri, you just proved Krogg's point. Do not press . It isn't a
standard ASCII-character.

Examine the chart carefully. Note that there are no characters that look
like or any other letters with accents.

DOS does whatever keyboard you have it set up to , and if you have'nt changed that to finnish
it will show it in it's default - american.

I have my DOS set to Danish and pressing an gives me an .

But if you're making text art for a DOS game you migth want to use MORE than just plain ascii -
DOS have so many good drawing character you can use.

You can see many of theese with charmap (viewing the font called terminal .. ie DOS) but it
will not show you characters before alt+032 .. and thoose characters are really good for DOS
drawing.
And its display is too small and the interface is not too good either.

I use a freeware program called Character Map Pro .. It's imho the best fontviewer there is.

I can mail it to you if you'd like, or post it on a ftp.

I also know there's an old TSR DOS program called RAT - Resident Ascii Table that does the
trick too .. I used to have it but deleted it because i seldom do dos drawings .. and because i
could'nt run it under windows.

Kind Regards
CeeJay

No wait i'll refrase that - I mail it too you if you draw me a new mushroom ;)

I was under the impression that Lauri was asking about the ASCII-art
that is used in the game. It didn't even occur to me to imagine that the
question had NOTHING at all to do with ASCII-art.
