I'm not sure this discussion belongs in the ASCII Art forum, but since it
is here, I will add my two cents...
 
I read a posting where someone suggested that pronounciation rules would
favor the 'j' sound over the 'g' if the 'g' is followed by an 'i'.
 
For statistics sake, I looked up 44 distinctly different words that begin
with 'gi'. 23 of them have a 'g' sound, 20 of them have the 'j', and 1
has a 'h' sound (Gila monster).
 
That would tend to support the 'g' prefix...
