ascii animation HELP!
alt.ascii-art.animation
· 6 messages · 12 Aug 1998 - 30 Aug 1998
I know how to creat my own ascii art but what I don't know is how to
animate it. I have seen many different types of ascii animation but each
script is different. If some one could tell me how to creat these
scripts I would be very greatful. And if you help me and you have a
webpage, I will make a link to it. Here is what I am trying to do:

I animate use a Javascript. (I do not use a program but plug my drawings into a template.) You can find a template at http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Studios/9334/animlesson.htm#top Since I made that template, I have been learning more about reducing the size of the animation if there are lines that are exactly the same in all the frames. But I only know how to do it if the lines on the top are the same. I will do some investigation and get back to you because your animation will lend itself to this reducing method. NOTE: I do not pick up my mail from the idirect address that you see. If you are e-mailing me and hit the reply button, add an "e" to "freent"; its absense is to stop the torment of automatic mailers. -- ___ cq547@freene+.+oron+o.on.ca _/ | ,^%--- llizard aka ejm |_____| __<_ \ I'm addicted to animation! --- == >/ [_____] __>,^ ASCII-ar+, ASCII & gif anima+ions ejm| | //| | www.geocities.com/SoHo/Studios/9334

Yes, I was right. I went to The Omega's Javascript Help Forum at http://transload.starblvd.net/cgi-bin/forum?name=the_omega and consulted with him. He came up with the following: Please excuse me for posting HTML here, but your animation is so short that I thought it wouldn't be so bad. I hope your newsreader translates it as text and not HTML. ---------copy below this line------------ <html> <body onload="tick()"> <script language="JavaScript"> var max=0; function tlist(){ max=tlist.arguments.length; for(i=0;i<max;i++) this[i]=tlist.arguments[i]; } tl = new tlist( " \\/6.6\\/--` ////\\\\\\ \r\n"+ " ( _ ) \\-@.@-/\r\n"+ " ,'---', ( _ ) _____\r\n"+ " / \\ ,'---', /// \\\\\\\r\n"+ " /_/ \\_\\ / \\ \\/Q,Q\\/\r", " \\/-.-\\/--` ////\\\\\\ \r\n"+ " ( _ ) \\-@.@-/\r\n"+ " ,'---', ( 0 ) _____\r\n"+ " / \\ ,'---', /// \\\\\\\r\n"+ " /_/ \\_\\ / \\ \\/0>0\\/\r" ); var x=0; function tick() { document.f.t.value=" \r\n"+ " _____\r\n"+ " /_____\\__ _____\r\n"+ tl[x]+ " \\ | | / /_/ \\_\\ ( _ )\r\n"+ " \\|_____|/ \\| |/ ,'-',\r\n"+ " | | | (|_____|) /_/ \\_\\\r\n"+ " | | | |__|__| \\|___|/\r\n"+ " \\__|__/ | | | | | |\r\n"+ " _|_|_|_ _|_|_|_ _|_|_|_\r\n"+ " (___|___) (___|___) (___|___)\r"; x++; if(x==max) x=0; //if(confirm('continue?')) setTimeout("tick()",150); } //--></script> <FORM NAME=f><TEXTAREA NAME=t ROWS=16 COLS=40> </TEXTAREA></FORM> <p>Thanks to <a href="http://transload.starblvd.net/cgi-bin/forum?name=the_omega">The Omega</a> for the Javascript help.</p> </body> </html> ---------end copy------------ Copy this and save it as youranimation.html I hope that you have Netscape Navigator 3.01, Opera 3.2b2, Microsoft Explorer 4.0 (or higher) that have the Javascript enabled so that you can view your animation. Because of this newfound knowledge, I have now added a second part to my template. It can be found at http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Studios/9334/animlesson2.htm#top NOTE: I do not pick up my mail from the idirect address that you see. I actually had intended to delete the bird animation from the page and in my haste to post "Part 2" forgot to do so. But what an excellent mistake to have made. I can't tell you how excited I am to learn that more than one animation can work. Very cool! I tried adding a "tack", but I got some weird "null" appearing in the first animation. then I tried changing it to "tuck" and just got errors. (this is what comes of using the "Blunder around" method. Do you think it's possible to have three? But the two on one page works beautifully in Netscape Navigator 3.04. (guess i'll have to get a book on Java). i have re-written the script from your page so that its variable names are clearer than mud to read, while keeping the general structure. i've also duplicated one of the anims ... so there are now three. its 3Kb and e-mail'd it to you.
