BTW, as I read it, "space opera" was coined in parallel to "horse opera", a derogatory term for spagetti westerns. Apparently, someone found Buck Rodgers-type sci-fi plots to be very similar to westerns. -- Aaron Davies | Don't let Micros**t add Usenet and Email to | (x) its list of successfully polluted protocols. "Peter Marquardt aka lastfuture" <las...@lastfuture.de> wrote in message news:FAqMOUUBbu67BQZjaru8U=g90...@4ax.com... > P.S.: OOL what's space opera? Space opera is a genre term. It includes such kinds of epic science fictions--mostly movies--as Star Wars, 2001, etc. They're all heroic stories within extravagantly designed alternate worlds. The classical music and the mythological plot of these sagas is probably the reason why they're called "operas." I read a quotation recently in news:alt.humor.best-of-usenet along the lines of: "Space opera--it's not over until the Fat Lady explodes." There's a phrase in battle: "It's not over until the Fat Lady sings." The "Fat Lady" is the opera diva singing the "Ride of the Valkyrie" in "The Ring of the Nibelungs," signifying the heroes' glorious deaths and their subsequent ascent to Valhalla. As a metaphor it's meant to mean that the battle ends in either victory or a glorious death or both. Many space operas, including The One, "Star Wars," end with some big spaceship or space station explonding in the end. Hence the satiriz- ing "until the Fat Lady explodes." It inspired me to do a somewhat larger piece of ascii-art, BTW.: http://home.t-online.de/home/ulrich.schreglmann/ascii/Spaceopera.txt > and is that animation all one can find > at your URL? I'm not getting anywhere in there I remedied the page. Now you get to my index page by clicking on the animation. Of course there is no index page, only the Apache server's directory listing. One day, when my scars are healed, I might muster up the energy to design a new homepage. Until then there's the skele- ton left from the days when I had a complete site. _ ______ ( ( | |_ | ,,,, | /| | `-| //// | ,' | |_,-|......| / |_| |________| ) ) _______________ ,' / .:/:_\: ,' \ / \ __ // ( \| \.__/ Do you want to | ,' / //)_`// | ||] `._ talk about it? | ______/________[~~-_ (.L_/ || `.________________/ [____________________]' `\_,/'/ ___ / |||/ ||| ,___,'./ ___--- / ||| /||,'______| -- / .' ||| //|| I==|| /-/ /|| __//_|| __||__ ( ( / ( ---/-||-------``-._/||-o--o---o---------------ool //\_\ / Hey, I dig "4d!" http://www.lastfuture.de/downloads/4d.mp3 -- __ "Space Opera! The classical >music and the mythological plot of these sagas is probably the reason >why they're called "operas." I think the reason is a different one. Pre-war family dramas on the radio aimed at housewives were called "soap operas". "Soap" being not just a family sort of thing, but because the advertising sponsor usually sold soaps or soap powders. "Opera" because the (family) situation had dramatic events (murders, separations, etc) rather more often, and the characters' emotional reactions were rather more extreme, than is common in real life. Hence a similar kind of over-blown dramas in westerns were called "horse operas", in SF "space operas", and so forth. > >I read a quotation recently in news:alt.humor.best-of-usenet along the >lines of: "Space opera--it's not over until the Fat Lady explodes." > >There's a phrase in battle: "It's not over until the Fat Lady sings." >The "Fat Lady" is the opera diva singing the "Ride of the Valkyrie" in >"The Ring of the Nibelungs," signifying the heroes' glorious deaths >and their subsequent ascent to Valhalla.
