Space opera is a genre term.  It includes such kinds of epic science
fictions--mostly movies--as Star Wars, 2001, etc.  They're all heroic
stories within extravagantly designed alternate worlds.  The classical
music and the mythological plot of these sagas is probably the reason
why they're called "operas."

I read a quotation recently in news:alt.humor.best-of-usenet along the
lines of:  "Space opera--it's not over until the Fat Lady explodes."

There's a phrase in battle:  "It's not over until the Fat Lady sings."
The "Fat Lady" is the opera diva singing the "Ride of the Valkyrie" in
"The Ring of the Nibelungs," signifying the heroes' glorious deaths
and their subsequent ascent to Valhalla.  As a metaphor it's meant to
mean that the battle ends in either victory or a glorious death or
both.

Many space operas, including The One, "Star Wars," end with some big
spaceship or space station explonding in the end.  Hence the satiriz-
ing "until the Fat Lady explodes."

It inspired me to do a somewhat larger piece of ascii-art, BTW.:

I remedied the page.  Now you get to my index page by clicking on the
animation.  Of course there is no index page, only the Apache server's
directory listing.  One day, when my scars are healed, I might muster
up the energy to design a new homepage.  Until then there's the skele-
ton left from the days when I had a complete site.
