How did you DO that? I can't seem to see from the document source.

And yes, it works in MSIE 3.0

I've rewritten the animation Veronica made of Martin announcing his
homepage.
The new version is about 8 times smaller, and I hope it will run in MSIE3.
That's right! MSIE3! Can anyone with MSIE3 confirm that it runs? it's at:
  http://fmf.ml.org/~shimrod/asciiart/mga-anim.html

BTW: This new way of animating should also make colors and other html
     elements possible.

BTW2: Nice anagram: "Martin G. Atkins" - "Isn't making art" :)

Nice. It seems frames can be handy after all. (Although there'd be no
need for those frames at all if JavaScript could modify just parts of
a document..)

I made a slightly fancier version of it, I hope you don't mind:
 http://www.sci.fi/~iltzu/ascii/anim/mga-anim.html

It still has a small problem, though. It keeps on flashing as the
display is updated. No big problem, but an annoyance anyway. :(

I did it using frames, one taking 100% of the page, the other taking
the rest (not much left). The source is in the invisible frame, which
constantly writes the next picture to the fullscreen frame. the source
can be found at:
  http://fmf.ml.org/~shimrod/asciiart/src.html

I've made a new page to give Martin some color using html, it's at:
  http://fmf.ml.org/~shimrod/asciiart/mga-color.html
The source is at:
  http://fmf.ml.org/~shimrod/asciiart/color.html

I've also tried to set a different bgcolor for the page, but that looked
really bad, because it constantly flashed from grey to black (the color I
tried) and back with each frame.

The nice thing about this page is that it uses frames, but not in a bad way.
I don't like frames either, but since one of these takes 100% of the screen,
and the other is invisible, it's nice. The not so nice thin about this way
of animating is that you can't insert it in a page like you can with a
textarea. You could offcourse write the rest of the page with it, but then
the whole page would be flashing, which would be really annoying.

very nice! I didn't think of that yet. I made a color version at:
  http://fmf.ml.org/~shimrod/asciiart/mga-color.html

Yes, but that's a problem that can't be solved, it already did that with
the textarea version.

Would it be possible to use an 'inline frame' to do this.... I don`t know
how these work because I don`t know the floating frame syntax.

Neither do I. But does IE3 support that? I don't think so.
Another possibility would be to popup a small window containing the animation.
Tell me what you think.

I think it may do, because my attempts resulted in a message saying my
floating frame syntax was 'out of date'. The popup window is a nice idea
but MSIE3 on my system always loads blank.htm into both windows first,
before reloading the previous document... which takes a while... and I
always see 'This page contains a script which is taking a long time to
finish' messages....
