Does anyone know of a source documenting format related info for the classic
ascii artworks of the 70's?

I know that a lot of these works used overstriking but would like to know
more.

I have worked some time with old teleprinters, but I don�t know if you
mean this. They work with punch types and have a similar technique like
daisywheel printers. This allows to overprint characters which is used
to make �darker and lighter areas�. This kind of �solid ascii art� is
printed on endless paper and most pictures are extreme large (we have
used them to paper the walls ;).
