So far most of those programs produce pure garbage (the only exception I can think of right now is Figlet, but then it deals with a very specific type of input). If you "prepare" the picture carefully before converting it you might get a better result. This "preparation" is typically done by a human. If you diddle the picture after converting it you might get a better result. This too is typically done by a human. Usually, to get a good picture out of a converter you have to do a lot of the work yourself. If you create a program that can produce something that is as good as something made by one of the best human ascii artists, then maybe you'll get some admiration. My guess is that this will probably not happen, at least not any day soon. Then there's the argument that the group enjoys, even encourages lots of "ugly" pictures. Well, pictures made by a newbie are usually not as good as pictures made by the same person a few months later. Pictures made by somebody who is not a newbie usually has that person's personal style, and some people don't like certain other people's style. A program doesn't have a personal style and it doesn't develop into an artist. If a program is bad then it is just that - bad. -- (, http://www.ludd.luth.se/~vk/cgi/asciichat/ /|__--__ . __--__ |\ '__ /|\ _{ _ `.' / `.,_ _________ | _________ _,.' (/ `. / ||``._.'
