<sigh> this DOESN'T WORK INSIDE THE TEXT OF <IMG ALT="......">
(AT LEAST ON MY VERSION OF NETSCAPE), HAVE YOU ACTUALLY TRIED IT?

 <img alt="One line then<br> another line">  DOES NOT WORK.
                                             ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Nor does "..............\n............" or anything else I tried.
When I try what you suggest, '>' effectively has precedence over ' " '
i.e. it closes [any current string and] all current tag bodies.
You cannot have a tag body inside a tag body.  The above is treated as
  <img alt="One line then [deleted text] ["]>      another line"
One user suggested padding the end of the lines with a very large
number of blanks.  Does anyone else know an easier way
*** which they have tested and found to work ***
of insering a line-break INSIDE THE STRING OF ALT=".....".
