In some serious novel I read, that took place around 1900 or so, they
described a picture hanging on someone's wall, which created a portrait
of some author (Tolstoy?) by varying the weight (eg, boldface) of
individual letters in a long quote from that author.  (Whew!  Badly
phrased explanation there, sorry.)  I think the borders were also shaped
to be his sillhouette.  But I assume such art did exist then.

Also, Lewis Carroll shaped some part of "Alice" as a mouse-tail, didn't
he?
