Hmmph. You can't really blame Lynx - if anyone managed to change the font
on my terminal from the "other end", I'd consider it a serious security
fault indeed. (That'd mean they could overwrite my system prefs.)

Why not just tell what the lines are (not) supposed to look like, just as
in the FAQ? If you really need an example, use only an image - with a
suitable alt text of course. (Even Lynx users can download images, though
few would do that for such a trivial thing.)

This is what I'd do:

|<pre>
|iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
|mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
|</pre>
|
|<p>Paste the above two lines into your editor. If they look equally long
|like above, good! If the second line looks longer, your font is
|proportional.</p>

and so on.. If you use images, try to make sure the text works even
without them, then give them an empty alt text (alt=""). Something like:

|<p><img alt="" src="monospaced.gif" width=240 height=20 align=right>
|If the lines look equally long, your editor has a monospaced font. etc..
|<br clear=right>
|
|<p><img alt="" src="proportional.gif" width=240 height=20 align=right>
|If the second line looks longer than the first one, your font is
|proportional. etc..<br clear=right>

Oh, and remember: Style Sheets are nice! Style Sheets are good! Style
Sheets make ASCII art look better! Style Sheets are compatible! Style
Sheets are the Right Thing To Do(tm)! USE STYLE SHEETS!

(with due apologies to Veronica for using the "look and feel" of her
Figlet ad ;-) )
