How about the following:

Actually,
I'm glad          Um..
Mandy `            `,,,
left!  OO           ..'
She   .||.         .||.

so full of crap!
                  She's standing right behind you.
                   `,,,
       OO           ..'
      .||.          -)).
______ bb _________ /( _________

(This would mean, of course, that you would have to retain your
immediate segue into frame 3)

I knew that! I was
joking! You think
I'm an idiot?!     ,,,
      `OO          ..'
      .||.        .||.
______ bb ________ || _________

Note that Fanboy is now standing a little closer to Nerdboy. Maybe you
could put something like a table or a vending machine between them so
that it makes sense that they are standing so far apart?

This seems entirely different from the *point! laugh!*. That
demonstration there is thoughts and dialogue. The *point! laugh!*
seems to be an spoonfeeding explanation for readers who may be unable
to make out Fanboy's expression.

>They seem to be using dialogue as sound effects. Similarly, I wanted to use
>actions as sound effects. Fan Boy literally gives off a *point! laugh!* sound.

Hmmmm. It doesn't work for me. (How exactly does a *point! laugh!*
sound?)
