I think the *'s do not fit in with the general shade of the 8's - they 
make the object look darker (or lighter depending on your screeen).

Out of the many suggestions I recieved, I think I prefer the Y.  The ? 
makes the edge smooth, but again adds a 'hole' to the overall shade.
