By definition of HTML successing blanks will be reduced to only one blank which is why ascii art looks rather odd. I'd suggest not to use the <tt> </tt> directives because they like e.g. the bold-style (<b> </b>) and italic-style (<i> </i>) directives refer to text-styles whereas the <pre> </pre> directive is a layout thing. And the text-styles will appear differently on other browsers while the layout will most likely be the same. This is why you should use the preformatted-directive. There is also a text about dos-and-don'ts somewhere which deals with this sort of thing. I'll post its address if i find it again.
