|I know that....five years in the ascii art business I should know by
|now :P
|fact is, I didn't!
|To make the script work, I couldn't use the PRE tag. (technical
|limitations in Java Script...)
|I had to use a font tag instead.
'------------------------------------------
I don't see why not... I haven't looked at your script, so I don't know what
sort of script it is - But I don't see why you can't just swap the <FONT...>
tag for a <PRE> tag?
.------------------------------------------
|The font tag works the way that if you don't have the first font it
|suggests, it looks for the next one, if you don't have that it goes to
|the next one and so on. (I've also done HTML since 1993 and have my own
|webdesign business, so I know my stuff). Obviously you don't have any of
|the fonts it suggests. (Preformatted fonts as Monaco, Courier and so
|on.)
|Check the HTML and see for yourself...
'------------------------------------------
Or you could just dump in a <PRE> and let users choose their own fonts? If
you really must specify the font, just use...
<STYLE>
PRE { font-family: "Lucida Console", FixedSys, "Courier New",
Monaco, Courier, Terminal, monospaced;}
</STYLE>
(Those fonts selected for the sake of example, taken from my own site.)
CSS works in a much more friendly way than using <FONT ...> tags, and (in
this case) non-css browsers will just use their own monospaced font and have
done with it.

|72 characters is the normal width of mail and news postings, I'm fully
|aware of this.
'------------------------------------------
And it is expected therefore that most ascii art should be under 72
characters wide. If you use more, the <PRE> tag should allow the user to
scroll to the right to view the bits of the picture that don't fit.
.------------------------------------------
|> Your logo is 96 characters wide. My browser showed a width of 75
|> characters.
|
|The logo is in <PRE> tag...it works fine, just fitting in PCs with
|800x600 and macs with 640x480. I've tried it with 17 machines, all
|looking good.
'------------------------------------------
If it's a <PRE> tag, any browser worth it's salt will allow the text (or
picture in this case) run beyond the right margin and allow the user to
scroll. Those that don't don't deserve to be used.
And I too know my stuff... My job is entirely consistant with designing and
writing web pages for users on a variety of platforms, so I know what works
and what doesn't on all of the commonly used browsers, including Lynx, IE2,
IE3, IE4, NS2, NS3, NS4 and Opera in it's various versions... and I'd go so
far to say that most of my HTML could be viewed on any browser that pays
attention to the W3C specs.
