Colin JR, First of all, it is not my policy/FAQ, but general copyright legislation/FAQ of the US (which might as well be those of any other nation, since we are only dealing with very basic issues here.) The questions you posted do not fit in this conceptual framework, and there is no point in developing alternative conceptual frameworks. You may want to give the copyright FAQ and other information sources a good read, and re-ask the questions from within the framework. Nevertheless, here are some tidbits of info. The use of a pic for standalone or composite pic usage does not change the copyright ownership of the original pic. There are copyright (and other legal) provisions on dishonorable use of pics (and logos, names, etc.) Copyright ownership is based on similarity, not how the similarity is achieved. Say that a manufacturer makes stuffed toys that looks like Frogstein (here is that inflated ego of mine again :-)) I would be able to assert my copyrights, although the stuffed toys do not contain a single letter of the alphabet. (Martin Atkins gave a good corroborating example from the other side of the fence. He drew a pic of about the same size, with the exact same letters of the alphabet, but which looks totally different from Frogstein, which illustrates that it is similarity/dissimilarity that counts, nothing else.) Look at the many Frogstein versions on my website or in the dejanews archives, that's better than any verbose descriptions. A picture is worth a thousand words, and there are many pictures. It is not really an option to put oneself or a group outside the law, copyright or otherwise. ================================================================ [] [] [] /( )\ Visit the Gallery of the 'steins!
