" PMSing" ? You've got me guessing there.

There does seem to be a lot more females in alt.ascii-art these days
compared with 1993/1996. Some of the early talent, like Susie
Oviatt, finally pulled out because she got too upset about her name being
constantly stripped from her pictures...and that was in the early days...
it's nothing new.

Nope, I don't think we can.

This newsgroup has always been a bit of a rough and tumble from its
very earliest days and it still goes through those patches. The
dedicated users ride it out whilst others drift away.

The old aaa I used to know was never very settled or peaceful for
very long. The group has had many faces in 5 years. It is a real joy
when you first find the group...but the magic diminishes with time.

The moderated group, rec.arts.ascii, was created to solve all the
problems we experience in alt.ascii-art but it does not work because
what users truly wanted was for the moderator to disallow all the things
that annoyed them personally as _individuals_.

Bob Allison, to ensure the vote passed, personally promised to
be a light-handed and benign moderator, but once the group was
successfully created that policy did not please people, and I know,
that behind the scenes of rec.arts.ascii, Allison got so much
criticism...from too many people...who were initial enthusiasts for
the moderated newsgroup...and they stopped posting and departed. And
so Allison just gave up totally demoralised and burnt-out by the
experience. He had expended a tremendous amount of energy, time and
enthusiasm into creating the newsgroup, writing FAQs, establishing
archives and FTP sites and all the rest.

But the bottom line is that people are fickle and too many do not
respect the freely given voluntary work and time of others. It is often
said that people place the least value on things they get absolutely
free...but of course nothing is really free...it is a cost to the giver.

I upset Allison by saying, from the outset of the proposal, that a
moderated group simply would not work for Ascii Art because it is a
subject which needs to allow free expression. But, of course, there
is a price to pay for allowing a free-for-all environment. At that
time I was flamed to a crisp by respected regulars of alt.ascii-art.

In the early days of alt.ascii-art users used to scream about GIFs
and greyscale conversions, animations, non-ascii characters and
pixellated stuff and they screamed about endless repetitive requests
for Roses, Birthday Cakes and Beavis & Butthead.

Today, the scenario has vastly changed. There has been an explosion
of newbie users who are concerned with their "rights" rather than
privileges in using the Net and newsgroups, and a diminishing number
of newbies are willing to study the basic documents on Net use found
in the newsgroups "news.announce.newusers" and
"news.newusers.questions" and the hundreds of newsgroup FAQs poste
monthly in news.answers and the other *.answers newsroups.

Nope, the newbies including kids, jump into newsgroups and expect to
be catered for and educated _as of right_ and have all their
questions answered quickly by users ofthe newsgroup. If they get a
hostile response then they become abusive and claim they have rights
rather than privileges. This can only get worse as the Net grows at
such a phenomenal rate.

So, your personal approach, and that of some other users here, of
trying to post pictures and comment about those pictures, together
with totally avoiding, without fail, any response to trolls and
disruptive postings will keep alt.ascii-art as healthy as possible.

Too many newcomers and relative newcomers fail to ignore flamewars
and once those people break their silence the damage is done and if old
users fail to advise them to stop responding...the trolls and flames
and aggro just continues. Some newbies make their very first post a
criticism/flame of what they have found in the newsgroup they have
just entered.
