I can understand the problem if you are sharing a machine because the
autoexec.bat file will be configured to fire up Windoze on start up and
will also fire up other programs using the config.sys file too.

I now have total control of my machine so that I have it start up on my
shareware MS-DOS shell utility "FileViewer" which suits my method of
working and quickly gets me into my wordprocessor and allows me do file
transfers/maintenance etc.

So I only fire up my Windoze 3.11 to run proggies like Agent Newsreader
and some games...otherwise I run entirely from my Dos shell "FileViewer".

In your situation I would do some sort of sneaky workaround perhaps
with a little batch file to fire up alternative autoexec.bat and
config.sys files to get me out of Windoze.

I might even just use DOSSHELL.EXE from windoze if I did not have a
DOS Shell utility although there are plenty of them around...some 
people even use LIST.EXE which has many in-built features for file
handling, viewing and maintenance so you could call it a Shell.

Whatever...its all a case of personal preferences and circumstances
and probably no two users do things identically.

Other people occasionally use my machine and are very irritated by my
DOS Shell. I just tell them to press ESC and type in WIN at the prompt
and Bingo they are in their beloved "Windoze Dos Shell El Supremo" :-)

Must keep all the natives happy yer know!  *8-)
