In Win95 (and 98 I guess) windows is not in AUTOEXEC.BAT, it is just run
automagically after config.sys and autoexec.bat have finished processing. I
get around windows when I need to by choosing 'Command Prompt Only' from the
Win95 startup menu which I have set to automatically appear for 1sec rather
than having to press F8 to get it like you do otherwise. It works quite well
but to save disk space I tend to just use the Windows programs that the rest
of my family use, which saves having two wordprocessors, two web browsers,
another shell utility etc.  I just use plain dos when I`m in dos, or my own
sMARTmenu program which allows me to quickly and easily start up any DOS
program on my system (of which there arn`t many, unfortunately)
