Conversions : Art or not ?

I think that it can only be considered art if it requires at least some measure
of skill (or luck).
Something anyone can do, is not really art.

I think all straight conversions aren't really art because you just input an
image (someone elses art) and press convert .. I can convert a gif to jpeg too
but noone would consider that conversion art.

It becomes hard to judge whether a conversion with JavE f.x. is art or not,
since JavE unlike so many other convertors allows you to convert a image in an
infinate number of ways.
I think if you spent a good deal of time tweaking the settings , making your own
shade chars, manipulating the image so it would convert well then it did require
skill on your part and can .. even if it's a conversion still be considered an
artwork.

If you diddle and tweak a conversion afterward making a more than trivial change
to the conversion, then it too requires skill and can be considered art.

So I dont consider the conversions made by TAL art, because they require no
skill to make.
I appreciate however that she does not tag theese images and tell people they
are conversion unlike so many I have seen trying to pass themselves off as
"l33t" artists with rad ascii skillz, by showing of their "art".
The ones she tag TAL and have been diddled by hand can be considered art though
and I'd like to see more of thoose - And less of the plain conversions .. at
least she could use a better convertor like JavE to make them.
It's not great art .. yet - TAL is still a newbie and it shows .. but this is
how all off us learned .. by doing more and more images.
