| I don't think it can be done.  The broswer treats text inside 
| an alt="......" as ordinary text for typesetting i.e. (CR)s
| are stripped out from the input, and places it in 
| one long horizontal box.  <pre>...<\pre> has no effect
| on this process.

I have this same complaint of Netscape.  On my web pages I include 
ascii-art as alternatives for many of the images.  This looks great using 
a text mode browser such as LYNX but looks terrible using Netscape.

The best example of this 
on my pages is at:  http://nunic.nu.edu/~dissel/mini.html

I don't think it is possible to set this up properly for viewing in 
Netscape.  Even version 2.0 does not view the alternatives properly.
