About ASCII History...

I saw on www.ascii-art.com in the History section that the oldest was a
hand-written thing, but I have one question... Would that be ASCII? Wouldn't
that be "ENGLISH"? Does plain old english fit for ascii? Please tell me if
I'm wrong, I prolly am...
