I believe that this is called "typography" and it is related
to ASCII art. Typography has been around for years.
If you run a net search on 'typography'. you will find
lots of information.

ASCII art puts a great deal of limitations upon the picture
that can be done. (And I'm talking "pure" ASCII art).
Letters are dictated by the ASCII standard. Spacing is
dictated with a fixed-width. I'm surprised that font style
is not dictated but that may be asking too much.

Typography allows for lots of freedom. Handwritten
letters (have you seen the handdrawn "book of John"
created by Gwang Hyuk Lee found at my website?)...
or typed letters. Last year while at the Niagara Falls
Museum, I saw a beautiful hand-typed "ASCII" rendition
of the falls-- I believe there were some half-spaces used
and overtypes to get the right effect. Some typewritten
art even goes as far as typing at an angle... as well as
across the page. Those techniques
are not permitted in pure ASCII art.

So, yes, I would say that they are related-- I don't know
if I would go as far as saying that one was the precursor
for the other...

The earliest pure ASCII art would have to be those found
on John Foust's Ancient ASCII art page.. which is really
cool--It focuses on teletype artwork from the 1960's and 1970's
http://www.threedee.com/jcm/aaa/index.html
He has collected and posted numerous works from this era
including the early Baudot Code art and 'paper tape' art.
It is definitely worth a look!
