|Hello out there :)
|I've been observing this group for a while. And i've been

|Any way I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips.
|I can never make anything small... Everything I make always ends
|up being larger because I can't get the detail in any other way.
|
|So, I hope you don't mind me posting a few of my pics, I'm just
|trying to Improve and I'd appreciate your help in any way.
'-----------------------------------------
You might want to have a read of some of the documents in the ASCIIArt
Documents Archive (ADA).
http://website.lineone.net/~martin.atkins/ada/

.-----------------------------------------
|This is my newest one it took quite a while for me to get it to
|resemble pikachu... it's not the greatest but I kinda like it and
|there's always room for improvement.
|***Also, am I allowed to put my initials on ascii art that I do
|such as this pikachu?? Seeing as how I didn't create the pikachu
|character I was wondering if it was ok to put my initials on the
|ascii "rendition" that I did..
'------------------------------------------
Most of us do it. It should be okay.

|That's about it... but I'd like to be able to make things

I don't do a lot of small ASCII myself, but the little I have done allows me
to share some tips.
Learn the shape of the charaters, which will enable you to use them to
create quite shapely, er, shapes in small spaces.
Also, learn and remember the charaters which aren't consistant over
different fonts, such as ^, ' and #. (More details in the FAQ, which is in
the ADA)
And finally, don't try to create *exactly* the shape, just 'hint' at it.
Hands are one example of this kind of thing - without doing a *very* large
pic, hands are near impossible to represent in ascii. Different artists have
different ways of representing them, but they usually involve having less
fingers or no fingers at all. The brain fills in the extra details as you
look.

When you do small asciiart, you usually find yourself using letters in the
pic more, because they offer more shapes than the usual |/\"-._ do.

.-------------------------------------
|Oh, and by the way, am i allowed to use the "[dot in the
|middle of the box]" character??? I find it very handy and
|use it a lot. (It's <alt>0183)
'--------------------------------------
No, you can't. As it turned out, since you posted in HTML it came out as an
HTML entitiy which is more likely to render as your middle-dot on other
systems, but you aren't really supposed to post in HTML, either.
Generally, anything you can't get on the keyboard (not via Alt-###) is not
'allowed' in ASCII Art.

Hope this helps,
-Martin

(BTW... seeing this post persuaded me to make a little program where I can
paste in these HTML posts and view them instantly, rather than using
BrainBrowser(TM) (that is, formatting the post in my head) or pasting into
Notepad, saving and loading into Internet Exploder. If anyone would like a
copy of this little utility, let me know. It's Win32 only, though, and needs
VB4 Runtimes... sorry, but I find Visual Basic is great for whipping up
quick utilities)
