Well, if you declare adding half spaces a "cheat" then by the same
token, you must declare adding monospace fonts to the ascii standard,
and therefore pretty well all ascii art postings on this newsgroup a
"cheat" as well.

Vice versa, if you declare adding monospace fonts "real" then by the
same token, you must declare adding half spaces "real" as well.

You sound a little like the Russian general who was defeated by a much
smaller army led by Napoleon, and then said of Napoleon: "That man does
not know how to conduct battles!" Of course, Napoleon did not follow the
state of the battle art at the time, he advanced the state of the art
...

More topically speaking, a standard is typically used by its user
community both for its utilitarian value *and* as a platform to innovate
on. In case of the ascii standard, the user community has innovated and
added monospace fonts, colours, half spaces ...

Trying to deny the role of a standard as a foundation for further
development amounts to self-limiting behaviour (such as those driven by
jealousy), either as an individual or as a group, that will eventually
fail to stop progress from happening anyway.
