15 years ago it became illegal to use lead-based solder on plumbing
connections in Europe (where both CJ and I live) ; About 10 years ago the
sale of lead-based plumbing solders became an offence (after a long warning
period to allow the supply chain to replace lead-based solder with lead-free
solder.
About 5 years ago the rules on hazardous materials were extended to
cover all electronic goods ("SWEE", Specified Waste Electronic Equipment, if
I remember correctly). These days, no-one is allowed to sell electronic goods
made using lead-based solders. The sale of lead-based glass in (for example)
CRTs is also being leant on severely, to the extent that now the seller of
such machines is responsible for providing disposal facilities for it. What a
surprise - existing inventory is being dumped ASAP and LCD screens are much
more affordable.
