Yup, I could see you weren't trying to diss anyone there, Alan.
Sorry if I took your comments out of their intended context.

No, that does clarify things somewhat, Colin.
I didn't help by being so eager to fan the flames. I must admit
fault there. (Being such a patronising asshole at the time probably
didn't help, no?)

And I must actually agree with you on this concern. With my current
experience in Computer Science there has been very little done to
draw attention to this (mis-)use of the extended ASCII-set.

Well, there has been little coverage of the Internet itself at all.
(explicit coverage, that is.) The problems of incompatibility of
Internet protocols has only been discussed in any depth in one
third-stage course, rather the focus is almost wholly on programming
problems in a single-platrorm LAN (Local Area Network) environment.
(Even then, the LAN is ignored most of the time.)

Is this the sort of thing to be ignored with the current growth trends
of the internet? Bearing in mind many of these students will be
taking a hands-on role in its future. For a network that has its
origins so closely intertwined with these institutions, surely it
should be better acknowledged by them.

But hey, that's just my opinion.

Nathan.
