HTML is about what the content _is_, not what it _looks like_. ASCII art _is_ "preformatted text", so you should use <pre> tags for it. If you don't like the default font for <pre>, the first thing you should do is adjust your own browser to use the font you prefer, and similarly I should set my browser to use the font _I_ prefer. The *big* thing about writing HTML is to learn to relax and not worry about what things look like. This includes not worrying about exactly what fonts other people use.
