Not to sound as though I think that I myself am superior, but I have
been studying the occult for a long time and so I'll set you both
right as best I can. I have been a student of the occult for very
nearly all of my life. Currently, I'm a young'un at 21 years of age,
but that is still a long time to have been preoccupied with one
singular area of focus. There is much that I have left to learn, but I
am able to point out where you both have made errors. ***If anyone on
this list has studied the occult, talismanic signs & symbols,
witchcraft, neopaganism, mythology and archaeology for longer than I
have, feel free to correct me if by some chance I should make an error
about any of the following (though it's highly unlikely):

The pentagram is your average 5-sided star, drawn with interconnecting
lines. The pentagram has been used since Egyptian times. When enclosed
by a circle it becomes a pentacle. The pentacle has been used for
hundreds of years and has even been used by the Catholic Church in the
far past. Today, the pentacle is used as a protective symbol by a
variety of groups: Wiccans and the general neopagan populace,
non-Wiccan witches, occultists, Ceremonial Magicians, religious
Satanists (as opposed to baby murderering cults), Goths (for fashion's
sake), and then (unfortunately) the immature teenagers who are
obsessed with fantasies of power and grandeur as well. Wiccans and
Neopagans tend to wear the pentacle with the star pointing upwards,
but sometimes wear it turned one degree to the left so that it sits
upon it's side (it looks as though it is upside-down). This is done
not to invoke anything negative, but rather to indicate that a student
has completed the first level of study and is now of the Second
Degree. Satanists often prefer to wear the pentacle upturned
(upside-down) because when wore as such it may represent the material
over the spiritual as well as a goat's head and horns (the face of The
Beast). The practises of Ceremonial Magicians varies and one would
have to specifically speak to one in order to know why and how he or
she utilizes the symbol (if at all-- there are few certainties among
this rather diverse collection of students).

It is both true and false to say that the pentacle is a Satanic
symbol. While it is used by Satanists, it existed long before the
concept of Satan (or Shaitaan) even existed. It is more accurate to
say that the pentacle is a symbol which belongs to those who
appreciate it, birthed by the pagans of old (who were not much like
those of the modern pagan religion of Wicca, truth be told). The
ancient pagans were far more free-spirited and less influenced (if at
all) by the Christian church.

As for the Morning Star/Satan connection: we will never really know
whether Shaitaan himself took the name or if the Jews of old assigned
it to him. One would have had to have been there.

Don't believe all that you read and question EVERYTHING. Deeply
research everything before making statements as if you know
indefinitely the answer to a question. It is silly to hold strong
opinions about things that you are not yet well-versed in. I hope that
you will give better sources in the future as well, though I was
pleased to see that you gave at least one to support your claims. My
issue with your source is that you did not at the same time provide a
link to a webpage written by a Satanist and instead only provided a
link to anti-Satanic propaganda.

Hope that that helped! By the way, the alt.religion.satanism faq is a
feature on my website (in case you care to learn more).
