That's okay if you like the look that one character gives, but it can be very limiting. Certain letter shapes can add nice smooth curves to your objects. Also, there is a process called "anti-aliasing" which can smooth out curves and lines. Take an arced line, for example... ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ As the line bends up and down there is a chop as is pops to the next line. This is because no anti-aliasing is used. Take a look at the same line when periods are simply added to help ease the transition... ..-----.. ..---- ----.. ----- ------ This isn't a good example because I really suck at this, but do you understand where I'm going with it? The bends look smoother. Try experimenting with characters that help objects bend. the / and \ are very useful. Periods, commas, and apostrophes `'`' help too. Here are some examples where an artist wanted to create curved lines around the edge of the wings and did so utilizing characters that have a slanted characteristic.
