Very different animal! If you are a regular reader of a group you can safely assume that you have already read the older lines and go straight for the second newest line. If you are reading it in a threaded format you don't need the second newest line and can go straight for the newest line (I often ignore interesting looking threads for a few days to let them "mature" so I can read them more quickly, this also works well for lurking). If you read the post out of context (which is also quite common) it's nice to have the whole thing there (well, enough of it to give a bit of context). Properly quoted text works for all these different types of reading.
