Ascii-art is fun in itself, but it has two special advantages for me.
One is that you can create a simple line shape suggesting what you want
when, even with drawing software, you might not have the skills to put
together a realistic drawing of something like my drowned dog.

Also, you can put artwork into a presentation with no more bandwidth
than text uses, to go wherever text goes when there's no agreed way
to mix images into the text: for example, signatures in email
and title pages on (text only) bulletin boards.
