Someone in rec.railroad wondered about how Iron Ore is unloaded from
bulk carriers on the Great Lakes.  The answer is that today, all bulk
carriers are self-unloading, but that historically, the there was a
machine known as the Hulett or Grasshopper that did the job.  I posted
the following to illustrate what these looked like:

Nice job Doug.... You can actually see one of these if you're in
Marquette Mich. (in da Up der Eh?) Just north of Escanaba....They were
going to turn it into a mall (can you beleive it) but it turned out to be
structrally unsound.

Only one difference: The Ore ships dock on the side of the Ore Dock....
This made it easy to unload ore from the Rail cars into the ships.

(Ok, I admit it, I wanted to tell Doug what a nice job
He had done, and had no ascii of my own to submit.... So I modified his
to look like the oredock in Marquette Mich... (A beautify town on the
Great Lakes Circle Tour... if you go be sure to head out to black rock.)
