I consider myself a rather skilled smiley face maker. I know all the
standard experessions, never get them backwards, and have even ventured to
create my own variations on occasion.

But I am always perplexed by one situation. That is, a smiley at the end
of a sentence in parenthesis. Such as this:

(No, I don't mean Bob :))

You, see my problem. The closing parenthesis interferes with the smiley,
muddling the picture. It looks as though I was trying to make an
open-mouth-grinning smiley, and did a poor job at it. That was not my
intent, of course.

Even worse, what am I to do when I need to place a sad-smiley in the same
position? Example:

(BTW, I was sorry to hear of your Aunt's demise :()

This looks likes some sort of shocked-smiley, not at all the message I
wanted to convey.

What is the correct protocol for placing smileys in parenthesis? Thank you
in advance.

You'll have to place the smilie outside the closing parenthesis:

(No, I don't mean Bob) :)
(BTW, I was sorry to hear of your Aunt's demise) :(

My kludge is to drop the ")" (like this. ;^/

You can't have closing punctuation, though, because it makes drool (like
this :^(.

Didja hear what -@-.- (Major Major) said?

}What is the correct protocol for placing smileys in parenthesis? Thank you
}in advance.

My usual reaction is to switch to a left-handed smiley.

(No, I don't mean Bob (-:)

Though this doesn't help much for your sad-face question.... Perhaps
a rose for rememberance, instead?

(BTW, I was sorry to hear of your Aunt's demise @}-`-- )

But hey - what do I know? I just lookit the pretty pitchers. ;-)

I agree, this is a problem.

(I usually try to add some space around the smiley :) )

(If it's a smiling smiley you can also just ignore the ending ")" :)

(If the smiley is in the middle of the text :) this isn't such a
great problem, but it might be a little bit confusing since you might
think the parenthesis ended with the smiley...)

And then, of course, there are situations where smileys seem to appear
when they shouldn't... can't think of one right now, but I have seen
such examples.

And finally there is the problem of punctuation that can, for example,
turn a sad smiley into a crying smiley. In that case the best idea seems
to be to place the smiley after the dot and with a little extra space in
front of it. :)

The above does solve the problem with the appearance of the smiley, but
otherwise leaves a lot to be desired. This way the smiley is placed in
a different part of the sentence structure than the text it references.

In fact, we have not one but two problems here:

 1. How to keep punctuation from interfering with emoticons?
 2. How to keep emoticons from interfering with punctuation?

Problem 1 is rather trivial. Any solution which places a blank on both
sides of the emoticon is adequate. As for problem 2, one needs some way
of identifying an emoticon and discarding it.

This is far from simple, and probably no completely unambiguous solution
can exist. However, a relatively simple algorithm would consider any
otherwise meaningless string of punctuation that ends in a (opening or
closing) parenthesis and begins after a blank to be an emoticon.

This would suggest that putting an emoticon before a parenthesis is OK,
as long as a space is left between them:

(No, I don't mean Bob :) )

The layout is rather 'airy', but is as unambiguous as it gets. In any
case, it'd say we can all agree on the following points:

 * Emoticons cannot close a parenthesis.
 * Double-chinned smileys are both ugly and ambiguous.

As an exercise for readers, try to devise an algorithm to identify
emoticons as well as possible. Consider for example the following
points:

 * Emoticons may use other characters than "()" as a mouth. "[]{}<>|/\&"
and so on should be easy, but what about :-X , :-9 or :-I ?
 * What about letters in other parts of an emoticon? How would you parse
"..about the exam (I got a B-) which we.."? How about "Bob" (a smiley
with sunglasses, potato nose and tongue sticking out ;) )?
 * What about emoticons with (parts of) a body, such as the (in)famous
   "big girl smiley"?

I am so very well aquatinted with this problem...
I can only offer my humble and not entirely satisfying solution:
(it looks something like this :-) ).
It is still annoying but sure as hell beats sad stuff like this (:-().

Hope we find a better solution to build a better future for our ASCII.

An example: this (Turnpike) newsreader software Printer Setup -

Default printer
 (HP LaserJet on LPT1:)

(When I can't get articles to print and go to change setup it looks like
it's laughing at me!)

Whenever I come against this problem, I use dashes -- like this ;) --
instead of parenthesis. It's less detracting from the ;) part of the
smiley.

>(BTW, I was sorry to hear of your Aunt's demise :()

Of course, this does not seem to be "parenthetical information" -- if you
only mention their Aunt's passing in, well, in passing, do you really give
the impression that you care? :\ -- (See, I did it again with the dashes!)

But you see what I mean, I think. If you want parenthesis that badly, maybe
you could reword it "(BTW, I heard your aunt passed away. :( I'm so sorry)"
because this phrase doesn't seem to lend itself to dashing, although for the
most part dash & parenthesis are almost equivalent.

There isn't a "standard, orthodox" way to deal with this. But
two obvious suggestions would be (1) spaces round the smiley
and (2) use sqaure brackets.

[ like this :) ].
