program to make acsii letters?

I go on different sites for linux and I see people making acsii letters
using /, \ | and all the other characters.. has any one made a program
for all this stuff?  like if you type "L", then it would make

|    |_____
|_______|   ?   Any ideas?  Got any programmers out there?  You make the
program and I will make a good clean website without neon, blinking
letters..

Most web based FigLet versions require a cgi and many provider didn't allow
to run them. Therefore I have written a (VERY) simple JAVAScript for online
conversions. The script uses only one built-in font (my only one), but with
a few modifications it should be possible to work with multiple fonts.
