Request: Good GIF to ASCII converter?

Does anyone know of a good program to convert a .GIF (or some other
reasonable graphics file format) to an ASCII image, preferably with
control over parameters such as character mappings, aspect ratios, and
the actual size to translate the image into (such as 80x25 as well as
80x50)?

There are some tools mentioned in the FAQ, but for one that isn't: You might try using GNU Disp. I've used it under MS-DOS, and it will display images in all the popular formats, and save out with appropriate conversions. One of the save formats is "ASCII"; this seems to be the same conversion as pbm2ascii. (BTW, if someone could point me to PBM, pref. pre-built, I'd appreciate it.) Very powerful tool!
