Someone had an idea for AsciiOS a while back. Search Google Groups for
"AsciiOS" for the thread.

Someone should really get round to actually implementing this.

I pondered it, then I thought "unix, linux, dos ... all ascii on the most part"
so figured whats the point? :) I might be tempted to write an ascii OS simulator
or something.

i think this would kinda be cool, i mean it wouldnt actually be an OS but kinda
like a .exe program and if u wanted to, could make it start when windows
starts, i would really like to make something like this, i only know QBASIC
though so if someone else know that they can help me.

well, I actually do know a little C++ so, if you post your idea, maybe I
could try
to help you in order to realize it.

In the spirit of ascii-art it should really be written in something portable.
I'd probably recommend Perl for this sort of thing.

For Unix users there is a similar project called Twin, at
http://linuz.sns.it/~max/twin/
which is kind of a text mode windowing system.

I was going to do something in C or C++. Probably C. Pure ANSI C using ncurses
would be fairly portable (ncurses has been ported to loads of OSs) and provides
quite a few low-level things that would be needed.

Hey, You've got some pretty good ideas. Someone should (I'm not
looking at the mirror yet) really try to do something like that

Oh no! :)

Hm ... AsCD could just as easily be AscAmp. I'd didle, but just thought of a use
for those bad eyes i did earlier ...

for those that have recomended me doing my ascii os with with C, i have tried
to learn that but i am only 13 so QBASIC was hard enought. Also at first I was
going to call it AscOS but now i decided on IWOS (internal windows operating
system)

Quite a neat text editor, but we could do with a word processor:

Wordperfect 5 was a good ascii word processor. Lotus 123 was a good ascii
spreadsheet. So don't think it is impossible.

What you need to do is make components like first a function that draws a
box then one that does a menu.

The little icons and things that make up a modern GUI are called widgets.
Make a set of functions that can do widget stuff

Text box
Button
Radio button
check box
Combo box
List box
Scroll bars
Labels
etc etc

When you have all these functions your program can just call them and draw
them to the screen easier.

addMenu ( "File", "Edit", "Attach" )
AddLabel (2,3, "Subject" )
Addtextbox ( 10,3 )
ExecuteGUI

Do you now about event driven stuff? Most GUI's are event driven. The
programs draw their window then tell the GUI to run. The GUI monitors
events and when say a button is clicked it passes stuff back to the
program. This is easy in C but not so in other languages but it can be
done. You can also implment multitasking.

If you have any questions about this stuff just ask me.

See the ascii attack game on my webpage.

Personally I would want it in colour but purists say ASCII is mono chrome.

Richard :)

I'm semi serious about doing a C or C++ one on Unix portable to 32bit DOS. I
just have to find the time, which I dont have much of :)

I love writing bash-scripts.

bash with its little helpers is so much more powerful than any (MS-)DOS

Get cygwin, forgot URL but its probably something like www.cygwin.org ... that
has pretty much everything that exists for Unix/Linux compiled for Windows, and
gives u a complete Unixlike environment on Windows. I use it for remote X11
logins to my Unix boxes.

I played nethack about three years ago for about 5 minutes but didn't

It will e a while before I play varients.
