In the future, you can "Rot13" your posts if you feel it is something which
may offend some people. Then the reader has to deliberately un-Rot13 it...in
which case, they were duly warned. I think the ^L was pretty effective in any
case, but school teachers or parents with internet access for kids can remove
the ability to un-Rot13, and to some extent, have control over what their kids
see

Don't take my suggestion as harping....just an idea from rec.humor.funny.

As an exercise, I just tried it. Since Rot13 only works on alphabetic
characters, and not things like punctuation marks, the effect was minimal.
The shading was thrown off slightly in a few cases, but by and large ascii
art seems to be pretty much immune to this treatment.

Good suggestion, but is won't work. I went and look at the post Rot1=
3 and you
could still definately make out what it was. Rot13 just basically ch=
anges
letters around so you could not read what was said but you can tell w=
hat the
picture is. I guess the best think to do is to make sure there is pr=
oper
warning in the header and do ^L or blank screens with more warnings.

"Rot13" is great for obscuring the content of off-color jokes in
rec.humor.funny, but it doesn't have much visible effect on the
pictures in question.

It may work a *little* better for ASCII line art, but not always
enough to hide what the picture is. The bigger the picture, the less
noticeable the effect of Rot13 will be.

Yes, but Rot-13 has little effect on the ascii pictures. It *still* looks
like a naked woman. rot-13 only affects the letters, and since the 'outline'
of the picture is a series of letters, changing them changes the picture
only a little. Try it!

I think a better method needs to be devised, because a rot13'd ascii pic
still looks like the original. Try a rot13 on the original pic.

I actually going to follow up to my own post. Someone mailed to me that Rot13
won't hide ascii art appreciably as the pictures are made of random letters
and punctuation anyway. Maybe UUencode would be a way to obscure potentially
offensive material?

But doesn't Rot13 just rotate which character is displayed? For written
text (like jokes) this effectively prevents it from being
comprehensible. But, for an ascii pic, as long as it doesn't depend on
shading or anti-aliasing, this wouldn't pose a problem, since it
basically depends solely on the arrangement on the characters, not the
characters themselves....

My opinions are just that - my opinions.

No offense taken - in fact it's an excellent suggestion and I'm ashamed of
myself for not thinking of it.

I have another suggestion. Place a control-L (^L) at the beginning of a
line. This should work for most newsreaders. Otherwise, a page of blank
lines should do the trick.

For example:

The following ASCII picture may be offensive to some readers.
If you do not wish to see this picture, please press 'n' now:

This picture really is twisted and disgusting. Don't say I didn't
warn you!!!

This is your last chance to save your sanity.

*laugh* have you tried to rot13 these images? I guess not, because
rot13 just affects letters, not all those dots and numbers etc.

  Ie. try to rot13 these: 01234567890!"'$%&/()=?|\_+*.,:;
