New Jave Animation

New Jave Animation

Hi,

I want to tell you I am working hard on the new release of Jave - but it
will still take me some days . It is really worth waiting for it. There
will be some surprises included, but I am not going to tell you what it
is :-)

Meanwhile, have a look at a new 3d animation (in Jave Movie Format):

Geezer,
All I ever get from the movie player is a grey applet and nothing else.
Problem my end?
Also, because I dont know, why do I have to download the JRE (which is on my
win 95 machine) to make your stuff work. Will it never run independently?
(stupid but honest question.)

Hi,

That depends. What browser, what version do you use? Experiencing
problems with other applets, like:
  http://www.asciimation.co.nz/
or
  http://www.karrels.org/Ed/Java/MandelApplet.html
? Those should work, if they do there must be a bug in the player.

I know, I don't like to tell people they have to download the rather
large JRE. But one only has to install it once and I hope it will be
included in future operating systems...
Java (ending with an A) programs like Jave (ending with an E) need it to
work - that's the disadvantage of using Java. But there is a great
advantage: Java programs are not limited to running on a certain
operating system. Jave works well on Windows, Linux, Solaris and I have
even heard from some people running it on BeOS or MacOS.

I am trying to remove all the bugs from the player applet and the Jave
application. If only people post some bug reports...

You are right - there must be a bug in the code for timing the
animation... I will have try to fix it later. But before that I want to
finish the next release of Jave. I would like to release it tomorrow,
but I am not sure if I will make it.

Wow, cool idea :-) It does not exist yet, does it?
There is something similar, but by far not that cool:
  http://webpages.mr.net/bobz/ttyquake/

Seems to be quite a lot of work to implement Quake the way it looks
above... But here is a point to start from:

If you released the 3D renderer as opensource or with tools to create simple
maze like levels like the above pictures then I think the MUD users/creators are
going to be bursting with joy.

Think actual 3D representation of the world , object and people in it .. :)

Such pictures as the above also serve as a nice background to draw cartoons in.
I can think of a new clipart catagory for Jave .. 3D backdrops.
And normal 3D objects.

Btw .. how round is the circle created by the 3D renderer if you render a ball ?

The ascii 3d renderer is only able to render polygons. For all polygons
the visible parts of edges are drawn. There is no way to draw lines or
circles (this would mean I have to write a different 3d-engine).

However, resolution is a great problem for realistic looking 3d objects
in ascii. It is ok with simple objects like a cube:

     ..      (wireframe)            ....
    :: '''...                      .:   '''...
   : :       '''...               .':         '''...
  :  :             '''...        .' :               '''...
 :   :                ...':     .'  :                    :
:'''.:.....     ...'''    :     :   :                    :
:    :     ''':'          :     :   :                    :
:    :        :           :     :   :                    :
:    :        :           :     :   :                    :
:    :        :           :     :   :                    :
:    :        :           :     :   :                    :
:    :        :           :     :   :                    :
:    :        :           :     :   :                    :

':'' :             '''... :      :  :                  ..:
 '.  :                ...''       : :            ...'''
  '. :          ...'''             ::      ...'''
   '.:    ...'''                    :...'''  (solid)
    ':.'''

The Jave logo is not very complex, but already almost too complex for my
renderer. The result is not that good when rendering it to a small size
like that:
                        .':.
              .....    .' .''.
.':..  :''''''...:.: .' .' .'
 '.'::.:::::::.''''': .' .'
  '..'::.            '..'
    '':  '''''':::.
 ....' .....   :  :    :':':
 :: :.::::''.  :  :    : : :
 ::  :.'  ''   :  :    : : :
 :: :   ....   :  :    : : :
 :: :  :...:   :  :    : : :
 ::.:  ''''    :  :    : : :
     '.        :  :    '''''
   .':::'''''''''''  ....
 .'.' :........    .: ':.'.
'.'..' :.    '''':': '. :.'.
  '    '''''''::.'''  '. ':.:
                        '..'
Rendered in a higher resolution mode:
                        ,'-.
            ___,.._   _'  ,'-,
/'\--_ +-'''   __| \ /  ,' ,-
`\ '\ . - :::==..-"\   - _'
  -.,"= \ _____     '  _,
     /   '    `  \.    ____
 + ..'______   |   |   |  ||
 || |/__: '\   |   |   |  ||
 ||  /    '\   |   |   |  ||
 || |      |   |   |   |  ||
 || |   /':    |   |   |  ||
 \/./   ''''   |   |   |  ||
    _\         |   |   `---'
  ,-` = '`-----^-''  ,/-\
 - ,' / . ==\....._ : '\ `.
\  _,' L_      ''| | \  '\ `.
 ''      '''----. -'  `.  `
                        `.,-

BTW: I use the generic shape algorithms (the green buttons in Jave) for
drawing the lines. It is no good idea to use Jave's - non generic - line
algorithm for drawing them - this will end in a much worse result.

For writing a 3D game I would rather suggest to use predefined parts for
drawing a labyrinth background etc.
Let us continue this discussion after the new release of Jave (still
scheduled for tomorrow, but hard work).

For reasonably powerful terminals (able to display regular, bright, and
dim text, for example) with high-speed connections (or running locally)
aalib (google for it) tries to provide a standard graphics library with
an ascii-art display device. Pretty fun stuff, but I've never tried
programming with it.

aalib is definately X Windows and probably Linux centric

aalib is definitely _not_ X centric. First time I saw it was on the
text console of an Linux box with no X installed on it (486 Notebook
with 8M RAM and piddling small HD).

And it is most likely not Linux centric either. Just needs an terminal
it understands. May be VT100/ANSI centric (or even dependant).
