Question: Is there a graphic to text map conversion

Hi folks, Is there a software program to convert a graphic image into a text map representation of the image using alphanumeric characters?. I remember in the early days of computing that images were produced this way on line printers using alphanumeric characters, but I'm not sure whether this was done using a program or by manual labour! If you have access to any of the PBM Plus utilities, you can do
this in Unix:
giftoppm < pic.gif | ppmtopgm | pgmtopbm | pbmtoascii > pic.txt
^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^
(these are arbitrary filenames)
