I was thinking the other day, that it might be possible to create an ascii
signature that appears as one thing in a fixed width display (i.e. pine)
and appears as something different in arial (i.e. Outlook)

I guess it would have to be fairly crude. Has anyone tried this?

I have tried (and failed miserably) to write poetry which works in
both normal and rot13 versions.

Yes, I really have.

I have to say I was rather pleased with the way it came out. It was one of
those ideas that just comes flying through space, and sort of collides
with your brain, appearing in it's entirity. (I think Douglas Adams
phrases this better in one of his books).

It almost seem like ascii \ / and _ were designed for drawing koch curves.
I guess I can't be the first person to try and draw one in ascii - there's
probably an early version of fractint for tty somewhere.....

I never tried Koch curves, but I did write a Mandelbrot Set generator
in COBOL on a Burroughs B3900 mainframe.

The resolution was piss poor, but it was fast :)

I wrote a Mandelbrot Set generator for my graphical calculator. The thing
only had about 400 words of program store, and it took an hour to draw a
96 by 64 pixel image. (I think I used an iteration limit of about 16)

If you have linux (or probably other UNIX), you should try out Xaos. It
has a ncurses (i.e. character) mode, and can do real time zoom - quite
surreal. Manages about 200fps of standard 80x25

Sorry - no I don't - I didn't get very far. As I say I failed

[steping into this conversation]

There are not many words that are also words rot-13ed. I used to use
an Organization: header on my posts that read "gnat tang" which is
a palindrome that rot-13s into the words swapped, "tang gnat".

Elijah
------
has probably only used about 5 different Organization: headers over the years

The YAWL contains 108 such pairs, though quite a lot of them involve
words neither I nor www.m-w.com recognize. The longest pair found is
"nowhere"/"abjurer". There several pairs of 2-letter words, but only
one, "or"/"be", has both words in common usage.

What is YAWL? Is it online? Maybe I'll revisit this - 108 pairs
might be enough for haiku ...

Yet Another Word List. A web search ought to find it. I don't think
the pairs would be enough for haiku, though, since most of them consist
of abbreviations, prefixes, obscure placenames and other things that are
not really proper words. Constructing a meaningful sentence out of
them, even if it didn't have to be grammatically correct, would be hard.

Excellent - I found 0.2 at http://www.ibiblio.org//pub/linux/libs/ -
hopefully this is the most up to date?

It doesn't seem to have pairs of words though, so I suspect there's
something a bit more recent? No matter, it'll be fun writing a program to
find the matching pairs anyway.

Hmm. Have you read much Haiku? (j/k).
