[tutorial] grayscale girl

This a little tutorial about how my -grayscale girl- was made.
Just though that some of you might be interested.
Drawing grayscale ascii art is very time consuming but I could save
a few hours work using Jave.

I first made a gif-to-ascii convertion with Jave.
The quality didn't really matter because I was about to change every
single character later anyway.
The idea behind this was to set the overall shape of the drawing.
This is the raw convertion.

I saved the document and opened it in a text editor for hand made
diddling where I worked on the top-half of the girl, keeping the
legs for later.
The diddling could have been made in Jave but I'm just used to my
text editor.

The idea was to use the gradient tool to fill the legs. To
obtain a nice shading effect I had to fill them separately.
So I erased one leg, closed the gaps and erased the shadows around
the knees and toes.

The next step was to make a custom gradient in the Fill Options panel.

I entered the following settings in the Fill Options panel:
- Linear
- dither: enabeld
- Any character + diagonal
... and filled the edges of the legs

The left leg was made the same way.

I opened the diddled drawing (step 2) in Jave and carefuly pasted the
two legs
in place.
The setting I used in the Selection Options panel was:
- Foreground
5/
I saved and closed the document and opened it in my text editor where
the legs shading and edges were hand diddled.

I choose the characters according to their Length/width/direction and "blackness". When drawing a line I also try to avoid using the same character twice after one an other. This drawing is to small to get a really smooth anti aliasing. I guess such a line looks better in a font than in an other. Maybe I am missing something? Or is > it just the "hands are hard" problem once again? > > :) > Andreas Aw! You hit the spot. I keep seeing the hands because I know the original picture, but as you guys probably don't... The problem here isn't that hands are hard to draw, it's that the thechnique used doesn't allow small details like fingers. I could draw them with an other set of characters /.,\<>:;`-_|(~)7 for instance but they wouldn't fit in the overall look of the drawing anymore. I have to think about this. I wanted to do a -true greyscale- ascii that wasn't a huge picture (huge pictures allow you more details) and yet that isn't a complete mess. Maybe it's not possible, I don't know. Hey! but I'm not giving up. :) The following is a combination of line art and greyscale. Using this technique allows you to draw smaller pictures. The result is crisp and have some "weight". I like it a lot. /\ /\ (_ \ ( \ (_ `\iRBNMMbn. \_ \VAPRBNMMb \o_)lI<= (=\ / ` ) , _\ ) ) / (_(/ /_ __( \ __ _| _| |_ ,edMMNBRB)\ \_ /(PRBNMMbn. dMMNBRPAV/o(_____)o\VAPRBNMMb fMMWBRYIli\ o o o /rlIPRBWMMj MMBRRSZIlti+._.-._.+ilIZSRRBMMM /_o__o_/KZYI0lLRBNWMMMN\_o___o_\ /_____/flZJlDYTPRKBBNWMM \ ___( \ NNBR0PRRBNMMMMMMMlIPZSKRNWMMMV \__._\ \ NMBRR00PRBNNMMMMM_o___o___o__/ )_ __)o)<X> NMMBRR00PRRBNNMMM___o___o___/ /___/ / NMMBBRR00PRRBNNMM_/\_/\_/\_( __/___x)/ NMMBBRR00PRRBNNMM \/ \/ \/ __ ) /(` __NMMBBRR00PRRBNNMM_________|_ / _') /__ ________ ___)(< (====. \_____________________________)_\ __\---' VMBBR00RBNMNV |__|\/ lMBRR00RNMV - VMB00BMNV joris bellenger VMB0BMV svz...@xs4all.nl b'ger - VMV IN ASCII ART WE TRUST V - joris
