Right. The Problem is not specific to alt.ascii-art. This is happening in All Newsgroups at Many, Many Sites. > Not long ago, our news group was beset with a large number of junk (or > spam) posts. Your Articles are not being cancelled. They simply are not making it through, because Usenet as a Whole is Seriously, some say Terminally, Ill. Right now, all but a Small Fraction of News Traffic is Spam and Spam Cancels. Worse, the Volume of Spam is constantly increasing. Many Servers are no longer able to keep up with the Junk, and they are losing Articles All Over. A Server that loses Articles cannot relay them to Other Sites, so that Propagation is slowed at Best, destroyed at worst. This is even evident in the Big-8 Newsgroups, which generally enjoy much better Propagation than alt.* The Solution is simple, but not enough Providers care to do anything. They need to stop allowing Spammers to use their Services, and to stop exchanging News with Sites that allow Spammers to post. Mw., F.

Just a note that demon.co.uk must be doing something right, because I am getting no problems here or in my big alt group (250 messages per day with all the usual northamerican and european contributors present). If nothing else, a bunch of sensible providers such as demon, xs4all and one of the decent northamerican ones will just have to combine in a mutual feed and NoCeM whole problem ISPs out of their shared network. Then the mnessage will get round bt simple market mechanisms: if your local newsfeed is collapsing for lack of such measures, then either they join in or lose your custom. Sensible users who find themselves getting nowhere because on spm ISPs will move out fast. |~/ |~/ ~~|;'^';-._.-;'^';-._.-;'^';-._.-;'^';-._.-;||';-._.-;'^';||_.-;'^'0-|~~ P | Woof Woof, Glug Glug ||____________|| 0 | P O | Who Drowned the Judge's Dog? | . . . . . . . It appears that many ISPs can't provide the service they are contracted to provide. So blame it on the spammers - why not !!! If you use an inept ISP who can't handle the current volume then terminate your account and find a decent one - in the end all that will be left will be good high volume ISPs. -- Neil McAliece
