First you have to type ctrl-v and then the ctrl-char you want. For example: To get ^[ (ctrl-[ or the ESC char) You must type ctrl-v and press ESC Another alternative is type ctrl-v followed by ctrl-[ ps: you have to be in the insert/append mode of vi Hope this helps Sanjoy
