Unfortunately, many people (including myself at times) don't want to
bother reading a FAQ. It's too bad 'cause a lot of folks supplied info
to make the ASCII ART FAQ fairly solid. You can learn an awful lot from
the FAQ (especially the longer versions).

This might be because many FAQs are *huge* (e.g. the ASCII Art FAQ).

I think you ought to consider moving the "Where can I find ASCII Art?"
question to a seperate document.

Also, there seem to be many questions that are not about ASCII Art, but
are about using computers and the net. These are legitimate questions,
but they are answered in other FAQs.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, these questions are asked in inappropriate groups (e.g.,
this one), but people who do that don't read FAQs anyway.

How about splitting the FAQ into 3 articles when you post it? There
could be a "Questions about ASCII Art" section, a "Where to find ASCII
Art" section, and a "How to make a .plan, use FTP, etc." section.

Any comments?

Well taken. Size does have it's down side too. The upside is that's
it's all in one place. One doc to handle, and only fifty some K too!

I don't count the ASCII groups among the inappropriate groups for
technical info. ASCII art is, in the way we use it, a computer art. It
is technical.

We talk about font formats, ANSI, compression formats, GIF
converters, Figlet servers, how make ASCII art appear correctly in a Web
page, aspect ratios, how best to view it, how to use the archives, the
need for uuencoding, and how to do it, emacs macros for drawing with a
mouse, how to untar a copy of Figlet, animation and 3-D technicalities ...

I'd like to offer another motive for doing it: limitations
on some readers' newsreaders. My newsreader can't handle
anything bigger than 1500 lines; chops the sucker off right
there! So I can't get the whole ASCII Art FAQ as posted.
What's even worse is that the part on how to *get* the FAQ
is near the bottom of the file -- past the 1500 line mark --
so I never get to see that part and learn how else I can obtain
the FAQ!!

Get yer scissors out, Scarecrow! :)

beginning i have to say that i like the FAQ. It is well organized and Bob
obviously spent a lot of time maintaining it :-)

>This might be because many FAQs are *huge* (e.g. the ASCII Art FAQ).

... ok, it _IS_ huge. But you'll find everything there that you want to know.
The FAQ is divided in chapters which exactly tells you in a clear way what to
do and you only have to look for the specific chapter containing the answer to
the question. So it is not necessary to read _EVERYTHING_ said there.

>I think you ought to consider moving the "Where can I find ASCII Art?"

... i would not do this. This only stops people from reading it because they
have to get it separately.

... ok, they're answered elsewhere but if all the people asking there
questions would scan thru the other groups they wouldn't ask here. This means
that the answers to these questions _NEED_ to be in the FAQ too. And i
wouldn't be too sure about people asking anyway and skip reading the FAQ.
Since the creation of the group many people asked how to uudecode etc., but
when the answers to these questions appeared in the FAQ, asking for this sort
of things became much less. And today there are only a few people asking these
questions and they'll get the answer "rtfm" :-) So they can look up everything
they want.

>How about splitting the FAQ into 3 articles when you post it? There

... yes, i'd like this one too. The FAQ obviously grows _TOO_ large. And even
worse the same thing applies to the web-version. My mosaic version (mosaic for
windows version 2 alpha 7) for some reason does not like documents being that
long. No it obviously is no memory problem. It's an internal problem of the
program. So i'd like to see the web-version being split up too. How about it,
Bob?

As to the Web version, I have it all in one piece so that once the FAQ
is transfered, the reader can bounce around it without the need to wait
while various segments are loaded or re-loaded. And I did separate off
the examples page, and the Figlet font page.

If your browser is having problems, maybe you should get a new
browser, like Netscape for example.

If you'd like I can start crossposting my Signature and Finger FAQ
to the ascii art newsgroups and you can just delete that part of
the Ascii Art FAQ.

Let me know,
Nancy

PS - You can access my FAQs from my Internet Web page:

Post when ready, Gridley, I mean, Nancy. I will probably leave that
part of the FAQ as it is because the FAQ goes to a lot newsgroups, FTP,
Gopher, Web sites, and is mailed to a lot of people. Whether it gets read
or not is another story. :-)

... ok, i'll try Netscape if you tell me where to get it. And no RTFM! :-)

Go to my home page, http://gagme.wwa.com/~boba/ which has a link to
the Netscape page, where you find a link to the FTP site. The latest
version is .96 released 12-8-94.

.. well, i did. And if this posting doesn't fail then you'll probably read
my first post using Netscape. Which is much better than NCSA Mosaic because
it is a lot faster and even remembers which articles one already read. It also
obviously behaves a lot more system friendly and has a better memory management.
The times when Windows goes swapping for 5 mins. is definitely over ;-)))
But there is one drawback: It does not support automatic signatures.

Anyway, thanx for the pointer, Bob.

Cheers,

Paul
