Hi All,

I not sure if this a particular group I should ask my question on Figlet
service. Anway, can someone help with understanding Figlet? I read FAQ.. etc.
Bit, still confused. How can I use Figlet fonts on my Mac or PC? Please
help if you can.... Thanks in advance.

You got the right group!

It'd be easier if I had a copy of figlet with me for examples, but here goes...

BTW, this is for a PC. I don't know about a Mac. (I'm assuming DOS, here.
It will work with 4DOS and Novell DOS, but if you're in the Windows Operating
Environment or OS/2, you'll have to go to a command-line prompt to do this.)

With figlet you should have received a number of fonts with .flf extentions.
Take one, say smslant.flf, and type at the command line

  figlet -f smslant.flf

. (The -f parameter specifies the font file you want to use. Without this,
figlet used standard.flf, if it exists.) figlet now awaits your input. Type
a small word and press ENTER; the output should be immediate. Experiment with
this until you get a feel of how long a line you can enter. To quit, press
either <CTRL-Z> or <F6>.

To capture the output to a file (say, outfile.txt) so you can edit it later,
try this:

  echo Hello, world. | figlet -f smslant.flf > outfile.txt

. This will take the text after the echo command (Hello, world.) and run it
through figlet, then squirt out the results to outfile.txt. Change the text
after echo and before the pipe (|) to what you want.

This is it in a nutshell. There are utilities that facilitate the use of
figlet, but I personally haven't used any. Hope this helps!
