El gobierno de Afganistan esta iniciando la guerra en contra de las
mujeres. La situation esta empeorando tanto que en la editoral del Times 
se ha comparado el trato hacia las mujeres como el holocausto de los 
judios en Polonia.

Desde que el Taliban tomo el poder en 1996, las mujeres han sido
obligadas a usar el burqua y han sido golpeadas y apedreadas en publico 
por no usar el atuendo que se les exige, aun cuando esto signifique que 
no tengan la malla cubriendo sus ojos.

Una mujer fue golpeada a muerte por un grupo enojado de fundamentalistas 
por que enseno su brazo por accidente cuando estaba manejando. Otra 
mujer fue apedreada a muerte por tratar de salir del pais con un hombre 
que no era su familiar.

A las mujeres no se les permite trabajar o salir en publico sin un 
familiar hombre; las mujeres profesionistas, tales como educadoras,
traductoras, medicos, abogadas, artistas y escritoras han sido retiradas 
de sus trabajos y enviadas a sus casas, y esa opresion se ha extendido 
hasta alcanzar niveles alarmantes.

No hay forma de saber con certeza las cifras de suicidio entre la
sociedad islamica extrema, pero trabajadores de ayuda estiman que el
numero de suicidios entre mujeres que no pueden tener acceso a buenos
tratamientos medicos por depresiones (y que optan por matarse en vez de 
vivir), ha aumentado notablemente.

Los hogares donde una mujer se presenta deben tener sus ventanas 
pintadas para que la mujer no pueda ser vista por extranos. Ellas deben 
usar zapatos silenciosos para no ser nunca oidas. Las mujeres viven 
temiendo por sus vidas por cometer la mas minima falla de 
comportamiento. Ademas por que no pueden trabajar, las mujeres que no 
cuentan con parientes hombres estan muriendose de hambre o pidiendo 
limosna, a pesar de que cuenten con doctorados. Casi no hay facilidades 
medicas para las mujeres y los trabajadores de ayuda han abandonado el 
pais en protesta llevandose medicina, psiquiatras y otras cosas 
necesarias para atender al altisimo numero de mujeres con grandes 
depresiones.

En uno de los pocos hospitales para mujeres, un reportero encontro 
cuerpos de mujeres sin vida que yacian inmoviles sobre camas, atados en 
sus burqua, incapaces de hablar, comer o hacer algo, mas que morir 
lentamente. Otras mujeres parecian haber enloquecido y fueron vistas 
acurrucadas en las esquinas asustadas o llorando, muertas de miedo. 

Un medico esta considerando que cuando se dejen de examinar los cuerpos,
se ponga en frente de la residencia del presidente como una forma de
protesta pacifica. 

Hemos llegados hasta el punto donde el termino "violacion de derechos 
humanos" se ha vuelto algo incomprendible . Los esposos tienen el poder 
de vida y muerte sobre los familiares de las mujeres, especialmente sus 
esposas, pero una muchedumbre enojada tiene tanto derecho de apredrear o 
golpear a una mujer, casi hasta matarla, por el simple hecho de ensenar 
un centimentro de piel o por ofenderlos en la mas minima manera.

Las mujeres gozaban de libertad para trabajar, conducir y vestirse como 
querian, e incluso salir solas en publico hasta que todo cambio en 1996 
- es la rapidez de este cambio la principal razon de la depresion y el 
suicidio-. Mujeres, que alguna vez eran educadoras, medicos o que solian 
ejercer su libertad son ahora severamente oprimidas y tratadas como 
sub-humanos en el nombre del partido fundamental derechista  islamico. 
No es su tradicion o cultura lo que los hace tratar a las mujeres asi, 
eso es ajeno a las circunstancias, es el extremismo que hay en esas 
culturas, donde el fundamentalismo manda, lo que los hace asi.

Cada persona tiene el derecho de una existencia digna, aun si son 
mujeres en un pais musulman -en una parte del mundo que los americanos 
no entienden-. Si nosotros podemos amenazar las fuerzas militares en 
Kosovo en el nombre de los derechos humanos por causa de los Albaneses, 
ciertamente podemos expresar de manera pacifica nuestra protesta por los 
ultrajes, los asesinatos y las injusticias cometidas encontra de las 
mujeres por parte de el Taliban.

ACUERDO:
Firmando esta carta, estoy totalemente de acuerdo que el tratamiento 
actual de las mujeres en Afganistan es completamente intolerable y que 
la situacion actual no sera tolerada. Los derechos de las mujeres no son 
cualquier cosa y es inaceptable para las mujeres que en 1999 sean 
tratadas como sub-humanos y objetos. La igualdad y el trato digno es un 
DERECHO, no una libertad, en cualquier lugar donde uno viva.

The government of Afghanistan is waging a war upon women.  The situation 
is getting so bad that one person in an editorial of The Times compared 
the treatment of women there to the treatment of Jews in pre-Holocaust 
Poland.

Since the Taliban took power in 1996, women have had to wear burqua and 
have been beaten and stoned in public for not having the proper attire, 
even if this means simply not having the mesh covering in front of their 
eyes.

One woman was beaten to death by an angry mob of fundamentalists for
accidentally exposing her arm while she was driving.  Another was stoned 
to death for trying to leave the country with a man that was not a 
relative.

Women are not allowed to work or even go out in public without a male
relative; professional women such as professors, translators, doctors,
lawyers, artists and writers have been forced from their jobs and
stuffed into their homes, so that depression is becoming so widespread
that it has reached emergency levels.

There is no way in such an extreme Islamic society to know the suicide
rate with certainty, but relief workers are estimating that the suicide 
rate among women, who cannot find proper medication and treatment for 
severe depression and would rather take their lives than live in such 
conditions, has increased significantly.

Homes where a woman is present must have their windows painted, so that 
she can never be seen by outsiders.  They must wear silent shoes so that 
they are never heard. Women live in fear of their lives for the 
slightest misbehaviour.  Because they cannot work, those without male 
relatives or husbands are either starving to death or begging on the 
street, even if they hold PhDs.  There are almost no medical facilities 
available for women, and relief workers, in protest, have mostly left 
the country, taking medicine and psychologists and other things 
necessary to treat the sky-rocketing level of depression among women.

At one of the rare hospitals for women, a reporter found still, nearly
lifeless bodies lying motionless on top of beds, wrapped in their
burqua, unwilling to speak, eat, or do anything, but slowly wasting 
away. Others have gone mad and were seen crouched in corners, 
perpetually rocking or crying, most of them in fear.  One doctor is 
considering, when what little medication that is left finally runs out, 
leaving these women in front of the president's residence as a form of 
peaceful protest.  It is at the point where the term 'human rights 
violations' has become an understatement. Husbands have the power of 
life and death over their women relatives, especially their wives, but 
an angry mob has just as much right to stone or beat a woman, often to 
death, for exposing an inch of flesh or offending them in the slightest 
way.

Women enjoyed relative freedom, to work, dress generally as they wanted, 
and drive and appear in public alone until only 1996 -- the rapidity of 
this transition is the main reason for the depression and suicide; women 
who were once educators or doctors or simply used to basic human 
freedoms are now severely restricted and treated as sub-human in the 
name of right-wing fundamentalist Islam.  It is not their tradition or 
'culture', but is alien to them,  and it is extreme even  for those 
cultures where fundamentalism is the rule.

Everyone has a right to a tolerable human existence, even if they are
women in a Muslim country in a part of the world that Americans do not
understand. If we can threaten military force in Kosovo in the name of
human rights for the sake of ethnic Albanians, we can certainly express 
peaceful outrage at  the oppression, murder and injustice committed 
against women by the Taliban.

In signing this, we agree that the current treatment of women in
Afghanistan is completely unacceptable and that the current situation
will not be tolerated.  Women's Rights is not a small issue anywhere and 
it is unacceptable for women in 1999 to be treated as sub-human and as 
so much property.  Equality and human decency is a RIGHT not a freedom, 
wherever one lives.
