IMHO, I don't think sending complaint to Alcyone.com would help, because it seems to me that Tran is part of the gang that owns the website. Take a look at the
main page (namely http://www.alcyone.com), you will find that they list several people as their 'members'. I believe that by 'members' they don't mean people
who are subscribed to their web space service (like those members of GeoCities, Tripod, and the like), but instead these are people that are members (as in
employees, or even owners) of this web-design company (or whatever it is) called Alcyone Systems. Thus it's no use to make complaint.

I guess the best thing you can do, if you find Tran's posts so irritating and unbearable, is to killfile him. For me, I never find his posts THAT irritating,
but perhaps because I am not sophisticated enough an ASCII-artist having the *honour* to have my ASCII art abused by him. :-) Anyway, just ignore all his posts.
After all, I would rather be forced to withstand posts by fools, trolls, spammers, etc., than having some sort of rules or regulations that govern the Usenet
(not to mention the entire Internet). I believe in the freedom of speech! :-)

That said, I actually want to recommend you to go visit this person's page at Alcyone.com: http://www.alcyone.com/oo/ I really like the ideas of it --and it
makes me realize the magical & fascinating uses of the letter "o" !!! ;-)

Just put in my 2 cent worth --don't flame me, I am NOT trying to defend Tran! :-)

Woah, lower your word wrap man.
Maybe you could complain to area.com, which is alcyone's host.

Pardon me! I am using Forte Agent, and have no idea about the word wrap...

I've used AGENT for years. It is, by far, the best off-line e-mail and
newsgroup reader around - but it's also the trickiest to configure.

The word wrap setting is buried in OPTIONS, POSTING PREFERENCES, GENERAL
where it is referred to as "Line Length". I set mine to 72 characters.

The initial setup is easy, but the good stuff is hidden deep in the menus..
Remember that some options are set for the groups, etc.. I find myself often
surfing all different configuration dialogs to find the setting I'm looking
for.. Actually, sometimes I've given up before I succeeded. ;-)

In that case, you should try what's under F1, helps every time!

Well, not if you chose the 'minimal installation' option at the very beginning! :-)
My harddisk is so small that sometimes I don't even want to allocate some space for
the help file...

BTW, thanks Nat for the tip about the word-wrap setting. I have set it to 85
characters, hope everything's ok now.

Not every time. I've tried searching the same thing with several different
parameters, but in the end I still had to surf the dialogs. Most of the time
it does tell you what you need to know, though. :-)

Best setting is 74, that way you make sure i won't wrap in any newsreader,
including the ones using a text-only (80 columns) screen.

In that case, then, don't complain later on that I have TOO MANY
questions!! ;-)

@--Best setting is 74, that way you make sure i won't wrap in any

@--including the ones using a text-only (80 columns) screen.

The reason why I set it at 85 is, as demonstrated in the quote right
above, a 70-ish setting would split a long line of words into two (see how
the word 'newsreader' being pushed to a new line), resulting in
'irregular' quoting (I mean, some lines with the prefix for quotation,
like my "@--", whereas some without). But setting it with a larger number
attenuates the problem. Could anyone explain why, please?

Another question, if I don't choose the 'word wrap' option at all, would
the ASCII art still be displayed properly? (as you can clearly see, I
really have no idea what 'word wrap' is about whatsoever!) What if I
'manually' do the word wrap (that is, hitting the carriage return key from
time to time)? Would that be worse and why?

Thanks in advance to anyone who respond!!! :-)

okies, i'll give it a try:

a pretty standard line lenght for *writing* emails and newsgroup
messages is 72 characters... the standard for *reading* those messages
however is 80 chars... this is to have some headroom for quoting
characters etc - but here is where the problem starts, let's try an
example:

i'm writing a message with a 72 character line wrap, and you want to
respond to it... now you want to respond to it and your newsreader adds
some quoting characters to my message, making my lines basically 74
chars long. now, if your newsreader is not very clever [or not properly
configured] it will try to rewrap those lines to 72 chars, which of
course results in broken lines. the only solution that i know to this
problem is to use a newsreader that recognises quoted passages and
allows them to "grow" longer... so in the above example, my quoted text
would be sent back at 74 chars and new added text would be wrapped to 72
chars... if i would reply back, the original text would become 76 chars
[72 + 2 + 2], your text would be posted at 74 [72 + 2] and the freshly
added text would be wrapped to 72... we could go on like this for 2
more times, after that the original message would grow over 80
characters long and therefore it will be wrapped anyway by the reading
preferences... my newsreader warns me when this is about to happen and
advises me to rewrap the quotes.

as a sidenote, you should use the standard quoting character "> "
instead of "@--" because many newsreader will recognise the first one
but not your variation of it...

well, if you turn off word wrap the lines would grow until you set a
hard return manually. while this is not a problem with ascii art pics
[where you want to manually controll the wrap anyway], it would be one
with normal text messages like this one. it's not very convenient to
write without an auto word wrap, as every correction in the upper part
would force you do do a lot of manual correction to get proper alingment
again. if you send a message without any returns at all, some readers
will have to do a lot of scrolling to read what you wrote ;]

least nothing about your email address ;] - are you french or canadian?

I never complain about too many questions, i'll sooner complain about not enough
questions.

That's just a matter of repairing quoting damage, we all have to do it like i
had when i split your sentence.
74 chars is pretty much the standard, there are very few artists who draw pics
wider than that.

>Another question, if I don't choose the 'word wrap' option at all, would

Not all ASCII-art, some of it is just too wide for most newsreaders but that's
very rare.

>(as you can clearly see, I really have no idea what 'word wrap' is about

I have added a "Wordwrap" button to my FA toolbar, you can do the same and just
experiment away.
