JGS updates again....

I just wanted to let you all know that I've updated
my homepage with 70K worth of new ASCII art and
two new JavaScript animations... (I still can't get the
spiderweb one to work right for me despite the help).
Anyhow, I think you'll like my new pics.

Hi Joan,
How about the below solution? You mentioned that the animation was too
long, so this splits it in half.
var max=0;
function tlist()
{
max=tlist.arguments.length;
for(i=0;i<max;i++)
this[i]=tlist.arguments[i];
}
tlx = new tlist(
// First half of animation
);
tly = new tlist(
// Second half of animation
);
var x=0;
function tick()
{
if (x < 25)
document.f.t.value=tlx[x];
else // x >= 25
document.f.t.value=tly[x-25];
x++;
if(x==max)
x=0; //if(confirm('continue?'))
setTimeout("tick()",200);
} //-->
Hope the above works,

It didn't work for me again when I visited your site... :(
I'm looking with a 16 bit, Windows 3.1, Netscape Gold 3.01 browser...
It wouldn't work... Maybe my system is too old for the longer
animations..
Anything past 750 lines chokes it with an "unterminated string literal".
I'm going to play around with the coding that Shimrod sent me...
maybe that will solve the problem. I'll let you all know.
Anyhow, in my next update of the homepage (which ought to be before
the fourth of july) I will have the last part of the spider animation
along
with a link to the longer version... it doesn't work for me- but the
coding
is correct and may work for others-- like you! :)

What can we rule out and what's left afterwards? OK, we know it's not just Navigator Gold, but we have a strong suspicion that it's Gold interacting with something else. It has been suggested that it could be Gold interacting with Win3.1. It could also be something to do with the system - amount of memory, other programs running at the same time, etc. If we can find one other person for which the animation fails reliably, we can record the conditions of both systems and see what things are similar. We can then rule out some of those things, by looking at other systems. We then have left the answer. Unfortunately, this involves a lot of work, and I have a suspicion that Joan just walked under a ladder before she programmed it. -- .--. |__| .-------. Possible? > -joan Yes, real possible; in 16-bit code the size of an ordinary array is limited to 65536 bytes, and a long animation or any fairly large block of data can overflow it; you have to use a different function and a different pointer to access an array > 64K, what an incredible hassle, although I suppose if you are a good programmer, you get used to it...I'm not and I never have...In NT there's a little known thing, a true 32-bit text mode, where you can write programs that output to STDOUT, but in those programs there's none of this near and far pointer garbage. Of course no one uses this, because it is difficult to implement things like an animated paper clip in an application for the 32-bit text mode interface. I'll bet you could do it, though. I looked at your ASCII page on Geocities and it's really swell! I particularly liked your PARADE animation. The colors are extra nice; that's HTML, right? The crowning touch, I think, was Colonel Bogey's march as a .MID file. How do you create those .MID files, anyway? Do you need a synthesizer? Is it possible to manually create a .MID file from a musical score? Those animations are so cool, I'm going to learn JavaScript right away.
