OK, this one went through several changes before I finally decided
to go with the joke I thought of first, following llizard's and
Cleese's adage about humour. The process really made the original
joke seem unfunny to me and yes, I still hate it when that happens.

Looking at the strip now, I really like the way Fan Boy completely
crumples up at the end; there's a nice contrast going on there that
I didn't notice when I made it. Also, there seems to be some sort
of character development here. Maybe not so bad after all.

In addition... YAY! TWO-HUNDRED AND FIFTY-SIX! 1 0000 0000! 0x100!
0400! Or why not 10 -- in base-256? :D

Joaquim, I really like the drawing of Fanboy's meltdown too. (...even
though #256 wasn't my absolute favourite Nerdboy strip. I think that
#254 has been the best part of this particular story)

Thank you very much for this one, which I DID understand.
I can see this funny person standing on a ladder with
a palette(*) in the (left?) hand and the nice ~--- brush
in the other hand. Well and I like the X crossings of the
legs of the easel (my dictionary for "Staffelei") with
the ladder. The new painting looks promising too :-)

(*) the palette is wonderful too, sure, but here is my
question: I can see the hole (o) for the thumb in it.
But what is the ~ below ? Rest of the hand ? Well this
    might be the best explanation.

Your "funny figure" is the one I like best and at the same
time understand the least. It's always very expressive and
lively, sort of exalted. The resting one in your signature
seems too short for me: where are the legs hidden ? The
first 7 from the left is an arm ? Questions over questions
- sorry, but err... well - you know .. hmmm... would be nice
to know :-)

Thanks again for this wonderful ASCII-composition

Aha! *takes note* Thanks for pointing out what you like about NB;
llizard is notoriously bad at explaining what she likes. The converse
however... :)

You mean the planned one? :) Still, that's interesting information. You
seem to subscribe to Aiko's opinion that the total lack of social skills
is Nerd Boy's funniest attribute. Non?

It's an ultra-compact version of an animal that probably looks something
like this up close:

Joaquim, I will try to remedy that. (I had thought that "excellent" or
"you made me laugh out loud" with no extra editorial comment was
enough explanation for what I like.)

I mean #254. Whether it is planned or not makes no difference to the
reader (as long as the planning can't be seen)

It has good timing. There aren't too many words to read. There is
subtext (in the first frame, we have no idea why Mandy is laughing but
it is clearly at Nerdboy's expense) There is movement - Nerdboy's
slump of defeat in the first frame, then in the second frame his arms
out in emphasis as he explains to Fanboy yet again why he's so
demoralized and the brilliant blank look in the 4th frame. (I would
have liked to see a little bit of impatience on Fanboy's part in the
third frame as Nerdboy seems not to be responding but it didn't seem
worth mentioning) The punchline is short and to the point.

As I said before "#254 is brilliant. (I smiled broadly.)"

I was only half-serious, so don't go using my name in a scary way like
that like you're being full-serious.

=%^7^^^7^^ Now with 20% more serious!

Hmm, OK.

I appreciate your analysis. I realise how hard it is to pinpoint the
funniness in something funny; I've tried it myself on occasion. You've
commented on "movement" aka "action" before, and I've tried to keep it
in mind.

Making short punchlines is always hard. I had to force myself to rewrite
the punchline several times and finally settle for a short one. I'm always
afraid that people won't understand what I'm trying to convey.

And looks are -really- hard in this format. I have to imply facial
expressions by using body language and symbols, which is awkward. :\
